Pourquoi Donald Trump veut-il acheter le Groenland ?

En décembre 2024, Donald Trump, pas encore investi président des États-Unis, revient sur une proposition déjà formulée en 2019 de rachat du Groenland au Danemark. La requête est assortie cette fois-ci de menace de recours à la force, à tout le moins de sévères représailles en cas de refus de Copenhague. Donald Trump ne s’explique guère sur les raisons de ce projet, sauf à mentionner des impératifs de sécurité nationale. Cette idée de rachat du Groenland par Washington n’est pas nouvelle : à plusieurs reprises dans le passé, les États-Unis ont formulé de telles propositions auprès du Danemark, dans des contextes internationaux différents. Comment, dès lors, comprendre ce projet de rachat du Groenland.
Abstract : Why does Trump want to buy Greenland ?
In December 2024, Donald Trump, not yet sworn in President of the United States, returned to a proposal already made in 2019 to buy Greenland from Denmark. This time, the request was accompanied by the threat of force, or at the very least of severe reprisals, if Copenhagen would not abide. Donald Trump has hardly explained the reasons for this project, except to mention national security imperatives. The idea of Washington buying Greenland is not new : on several occasions in the past, the United States has made such proposals to Denmark, in different international contexts. How can we understand this plan to buy Greenland ?
